Terms You’ll See on This Site
A short glossary of terms specific to the Seven Sisters Apostolate, defined here per SRD 6.0 Appendix B.
- Seven Sisters Apostolate
- A Catholic apostolate in which seven women each commit to pray one Holy Hour per week on a distinct day for a specific priest, ensuring he receives intercessory prayer every day of the week throughout the year.
- Anchoress
- The coordinator of a Seven Sisters group; the “anchor” who communicates with the priest, manages member commitments, and keeps the group focused on its mission. Term originates from medieval women of intense prayer anchored to a church.
- Holy Hour
- One hour of prayer, ideally offered before the Blessed Sacrament in an Adoration chapel or before a Tabernacle, dedicated to the intention of a specific priest.
- Perpetual Adoration
- A form of Catholic prayer at a church in which the Blessed Sacrament (the Eucharist) is exposed continuously, allowing worshippers to pray in the presence of Jesus at any hour of the day or night.
- Commitment Day
- The annual celebration, typically in June on or around the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, when Seven Sisters make or renew their one-year commitment to the apostolate.
- Communiqué
- The national Seven Sisters Apostolate's monthly letter of spiritual reflection and news, distributed to members worldwide. Published at sevensistersapostolate.org/communiques.
- The "Holy Wasting"
- The theological concept at the heart of the apostolate, drawn from Matthew 26:10 (the woman who anointed Jesus). A generous, unhurried gift of time before the Lord, for the sanctification of priests.
